USV-based survey in MAREANO in 2025 – is it possible?

MAREANO is in the planning phase for a survey with Unmanned Surface Vehicle (USV) next year. Therefore, we kindly ask the industry for specific feedback on USV as a survey platform – already by December 9.

– The MAREANO programme wants to accelerate the shift towards lower carbon emissions in seabed mapping. Use of USVs is one way to achieve this goal. Therefore, we need to have an overview over the possibilities in the market, and which climate and environmental considerations that can be relevant in the specific competition, says Helge Welde at the Norwegian Mapping Authority, Hydrographic Service.

In need of input from the industry

The MAREANO programme intends to publish a USV-based tender for the 2025 season. Currently we are investigating whether the USV as a survey platform can meet the MAREANO standard for multibeam and sub-bottom profiler (SBP) data, potentially with some modification to the existing standard. The tender will help us develop the award criteria for climate and environmental considerations used in MAREANO tenders.

– We kindly ask the industry to suggest optimal solutions for mapping in selected areas in the North Sea. In addition, we are seeking the industry’s input on the current technical specification, to adapt the tender documents that MAREANO will utilize in the USV-based 2025 procurement, says Welde.

Notice of intent

MAREANO kindly ask the industry for specific feedback that is important when USV is used as the survey platform. If your company would like to provide us with your feedback, please complete the survey available at TED and Doffin, by the 9th of December:

In the survey you will find detailed information regarding the areas of interest. Your contribution will be handled confidentially.

New regulations

In January 2024, new regulations were introduced with the aim to reduce Norwegian procurements overall climate footprint and environmental impact. Climate and environmental considerations are now given a higher weight in public procurements.
